Modern financial planning

for the next generation of physicians.

Dear Reader & Avid Life Liver -

My name is Kyle Goulard, I’m a financial planner and coach, and I primarily serve early to mid-career physicians in Portland, Oregon and around the United States. I’ve witnessed firsthand the difficult decisions that this group is often faced with due to a delay in starting their careers, the amount of debt incurred through school and residency, and the new set of financial challenges once they’ve entered the workforce.

As if that weren't enough, the financial services industry is designed and driven to profit from the newly elevated income of physicians (often in lieu of doing right by the individual). This can be a recipe for distrust - but it doesn't have to be that way. This group is in a position to succeed and thrive with the right guidance and partnership.

That is why I launched Goulard Financial Planning, where I am ethically and legally bound as a fiduciary and I provide advice and service for one flat fee.

No commissions. No third party compensation arrangements. Simply conflict-free advice.

Onward and Upward,

Kyle Goulard, CFP®

Founder and Director of Happiness

Process & Topics of Focus

Step 1 - Explore (Approx. 1 hour)

Hi! Let's get acquainted.

What is top of mind for you at the moment? What do you hope to accomplish by partnering with an advisor? Let’s jump on a video call and talk about it.

It's important that I demonstrate how I may add value to your life before you pay me a single dollar in fees.

I will send you an introductory packet with a short list of items for you to complete prior to our consultation. This will allow me to explain the benefits and services that I provide directly related to your issues, concerns, and aspirations. By the end of this meeting, you will have your most pressing questions addressed and you will get a glimpse into how our client-advisor relationship would look.

Are we a good fit for one another? Great! Let’s continue where we left off and schedule the next three meetings to get your financial life plan in order.

If we’re not a good fit, I will gladly introduce you to a firm that is better suited to meet your needs. It’s important to me that we find you the best match for your unique financial life.

Step 2 - Engage & Envision (Approx. 1.5 hours)

In this meeting, we will establish your “Point A” so that we can develop relevant strategies to improve your financial life. It is here where we will begin identifying and clarifying your true values and priorities, creating a vision of your ideal life, and establishing meaningful and purposeful goals. If you are completing this process with a spouse or partner, you may find this stage to be deeply comforting and satisfying.

We will also be organizing your financial data into one centralized digital location and introducing you to RightCapital, our financial planning software and your online financial dashboard. In so doing, we will begin taking actionable steps toward your ideal future.

After this meeting, we will be hard at work developing the first draft of your financial plan.

 Step 3 - Enlighten & Empower (Approx. 1.5 hours)

With the first draft of your financial life plan in hand, we will explain our recommendations and how they support your values and life vision. Don't worry, we're not going to hand you a hard bound book full of charts, graphs, and point 6 font, then expect you to implement the plan! As part of our Ongoing Financial Life Planning Services, we will team up with you and briefly explain how and when the recommendations could be implemented and who would be responsible for completing those. We will also discuss strategies for maintaining focus on your goals and priorities while proactively planning for future life transitions.

Some questions we address may include, but are not limited to:

  • Is your student debt being addressed in an effective and organized way?
  • Are your saving and spending habits in alignment with your partner's/spouse's?
  • Are your investments in alignment with your personal values and goals?
  • Are you on track to financial independence on your own terms?

We will run any additional analyses and reports based on modifications discussed and send you an updated copy of your financial life plan.

Step 4 - Ongoing Communication, Plan Updates, and Reviews

This is the beginning of the rest of your journey! While this completes the initial financial planning process, our work together will continue in the form of unlimited check-ins via email, phone, and video call. We want to support you in your journey as you explore new concerns, aspirations, and transitions.

We will hold semi-annual review meetings to make sure your financial life plan remains current and relevant to your evolving circumstances, values, and priorities.

Investment Management is a complimentary service for clients engaged in our Ongoing Financial Life Planning Services. If setting up retirement or investment accounts is one of our recommendations, you may do so with us at no additional advisory fee.

If other professionals (attorneys, CPAs, insurance, etc.) are required to accomplish your goals, we will happily introduce you to a trusted individual in our network. If you have an existing relationship, we will work with them to implement our recommendations.

Fee Only and Fiduciary? What does it mean and why is it important to me?

To be "Fee Only", an advisor's compensation must come exclusively from their respective client in the form of an agreed upon fee such as a flat dollar amount or a percentage of assets. By removing other incentives, like commissions or 3rd party compensation agreements, our clients receive unbiased, conflict-free advice.

Goulard Financial Planning LLC is a Registered Investment Advisor and Kyle Goulard is a Certified Financial Planner™. At both levels, we are ethically and legally bound to act as a Fiduciary. Kyle has also taken the Fiduciary Oath required of all XY Planning Network members.

I'm not an early to mid-career physician. Can we still work together?

Yes! While our services are designed with the early to mid-career physician in mind, many individuals are faced with similar financial challenges and seek a professional who they trust and can partner with. Grab a spot on our calendar for a complimentary Explore meeting to answer your most pressing questions and to receive an initial assessment. If we can't be of best service to you going forward, then we will work with you to find a fee only, fiduciary advisor who can!

I don't live in Portland, how do I work with you?

We are physically based in Portland, OR - but we’re a virtual practice. This means that we leverage technology to make our work together convenient and effective - from video conferencing to 24/7 secure access to your financial plan and accounts - we are designed to simplify your financial life, not complicate it. If you happen to be in beautiful Portland, we would love to meet you in-person!

What is your investment approach if I choose to take advantage of your investment management services?

We invest with medium to long-term goals in mind. We believe in keeping investment costs low, whether we’re using index funds or other low cost investment solutions. We also believe that our clients may want to align their investments with their values through the use of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) funds.

We won't be a good fit if you are someone who believes they can beat the market or wants to talk about daily stock returns.

Do I need to have a lot of money to work with a financial planner?

No you don't! We believe that financial advice should be available to all ages, regardless of the size of your investment accounts or stage of your career.

Will you work with my other professionals like my CPA and attorney?

Of course. We welcome the opportunity to work with your trusted professionals to help you implement the recommendations identified during our planning process.

If other professionals are required to accomplish your goals and you don't have an established relationship, we will happily introduce you to a trusted individual in our network.

FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF HAPPINESS

If you are like most people, it's hard to find time in your busy day-to-day life to sit down with your loved ones to discuss priorities and make decisions about your life and finances. Most individuals and couples find themselves juggling many different needs and wants and have difficulty identifying their priorities. That's why when I launched Goulard Financial Planning in 2019, I did it to serve my clients not only as a financial advisor, but as as a thought partner, guide, and educator.

I bring fresh and convenient advice to my clients by leveraging video conferencing technology and cloud-based file sharing. I am a video call away and our work together is always a click away and available via your personal, digital dashboard.

I earned the CFP® designation in my 30s, which has provided me a larger toolbox for addressing unique financial challenges often faced by individuals and families. I’m also a follower of the life-centered approach to the financial planning process, which provides clarity and connection between your money and your personal values and priorities.

I serve my clients in a fiduciary capacity, which means I am ethically and legally obligated to put your interests ahead of mine. Here's my oath to prove it.

In my free time, I love skiing on Mt. Hood, taking a couple minutes to dream up my next adventure with a Scott's Cheap Flights email, and hitting the open road with the latest Above & Beyond podcast. You may also find me scouting the wonderful city of Portland in search of the best buttery, flaky croissant.

At Goulard Financial Planning, we believe the investment process and your portfolio should be connected to and driven by the personal goals and values of your financial plan. It should be sophisticated, yet not complicated. We also believe in the power of expertise and providing our clients access to some of the best investment minds in the business. To that point, we have partnered with XY Investment Solutions, LLC (“XYIS”) and gained access to their Investment Committee to construct and continuously review our portfolios.

XY Investment Solutions is exclusively designed to serve the members of XY Planning Network (“XYPN”) and is focused on delivering investment solutions for the modern advisor and client. They believe in the tenants of asset allocation and diversification, low cost, tax efficiency, and discipline. They take a globalview and believe in covering both the size and style spectrum with emphasis on value.
